The company said that it was contacted by none other than The Bionetics Corporation to support in the production of an LED solution meant for the International Space Station or ISS. The Boeing Company, which is the main supplier to NASA for its ISS division, initiated this project along with The Bionetics Corporation to develop a lighting system that will assist in circadian alignment of the astronauts in the International Space Station.
Lighting solution to maintain the body’s natural order?
As there is a lack of 24-hour cycle in the space, the astronauts face the problem of maintaining the natural order of the body and ISS hopes that an LED lighting system can provide a solution to this. The Bionetics Corporation has turned to the innovators at LSGC to help them in developing the design for this type of progressive LED system to achieve the desired results.
How can LEDs lighting system help?
The research division of Lighting Science is working to develop an innovative LED-based system that can help the astronauts to enable circadian alignment and adjust them according to the 24-hour a day cycle. The system is being developed as per the specifications laid by NASA which requires the lighting product to be of specific color appearances (CRI) and color temperatures (CCT) during the different times of the day.
The LED lighting technology used in this innovative product will have a life span of nearly 50,000 hours, and this will be the main lighting source for this system. Furthermore, the LEDs are easy to manage, and they provide constant color temperature and soft dimming throughout the 24 hours.
Experience and knowledge comes together!
According to a staff of The Bionetics Corporation, the company has chosen to partner with Lighting Science because the later has far-reaching knowledge and industrial experience required to provide the exact technical guidance, testing resources, and feedback for the development of this unique lighting system. Reportedly, Lighting Science is highly excited about this project the Director, Rob Soler said in an interview that the company looks at this as a great opportunity to push the limits of LED technology.
